More about Dr. Mak's Superfoods: Purpose, Passion, and Good Health

Recently I've been reflecting on how our actions in the world can have a lasting positive impact on others, AND how I aim to end each day hoping to have made the world just a little better- even by simple means such as a nutritious breakfast. As I've embarked on creating this product and sharing it with others, so many people have expressed to me how they want to eat healthier, move more, and feel better.

I've been developing these overnight oats for a few years. At first, I began eating them daily in response to a high cholesterol reading and began a more committed exercise routine. At the same time I was consulting and working on my dissertation and needed easy, fast, and healthy foods. Overnight oats became my breakfast solution. It was affordable, convenient and also tasty. Every Sunday night, I'd make a single batch to meet my breakfast needs until Thursday. When I'd have guests, I'd share and they tended to like it. My dissertation work was largely on farmers markets, so I was always experimenting with local ingredients like honey, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, etc., and I began thinking that I could share this wonderful convenience, creation, and flavor with others. My cholesterol readings lowered but continue to fluctuate if I reduce my exercise, eat too many unhealthy fats (OMG Ice Cream!), and so on- so...nothing is a solution.

As an average runner (part of my cholesterol solution), I began looking for a stable fuel for runs that lasted more than 30 minutes- providing a balance between carbs and protein. I had been using lots of pre/post workout powders- and I think they worked, but I just wanted a more palatable solution. So I began adding seeds, nut butters, and yogurts to the overnight oats and noticed more stable and sustained energy. Over the years I thought about packaging and selling this product too but never had time. Some older relatives suggested I begin taking supplements now to ensure prostate health. Instead I looked for dietary options and landed on pumpkin seeds. Each ingredient in the overnight oats mix has a story like this. In future blog posts I'll detail what peer reviewed findings say about each ingredient and how it can help manage a healthy life.

During the week of Hurricane Helene, I moved to Asheville, NC. I January I began working in a job that was a near-continuation of my dissertation so I was quite happy. In February I was 'removed' from my position as 'probationary' employee, along with thousands of others. Although some national court rulings returned my to work for a short time, I could not afford to take the risk or stress of being 'removed' effective immediately again. In April 2025, I decided to give my product idea a chance- overnight oats. I focused on three flavors I love: cacao, matcha, and cinnamon, and have been working on flavor balance overnight after overnight oat batch until I got to where I am now.

As I've piloted the flavors with friends and family and shared my story about how this food has been part of my journey to a healthier lifestyle, I have observed how it has helped others think about how their food can impact their health. Like me, I hope that this nutritious meal can be a step on your journey with good health, that you will add fresh fruits, yogurts, and nut butters to it, and share it with others.

P.S. My current favorite flavor is cinnamon with banana and walnut added fresh in the morning.
